Jewelry and the Greek culture

The Greeks introduced jewelry into their culture in the Hellenistic period. Among the pieces found are earrings, pendants, bracelets, rings, crowns, tiaras and hair ornaments. The main function of Greek jewelry was to show and make others notice the social status of the wearer. Most of the time it was the women who wore the most jewelry. We even find paintings where women are represented with their necklaces and pendants. The Greeks began to use gold and gems around 1400 A.D. and by 300 A.D. they had already mastered an advanced technology for setting jewelry with cut stones such as amethyst, garnet (widely used), pearls or emerald.
